Leave the World Behind Spoilers and Summary

The film follows the Sanford family, who head on an impromptu trip from Brooklyn to Long Island. Their rental house is beautiful, the kids are happy, and there’s even a pool. Two strangers, George (Mahershala Ali) and Ruth Scott (Myha’la), knock on the door and claim they own the property. They’ve traveled from the city as well—and say there’s been a blackout. As the world around them unravels, both families are forced to rely on each other for survival.

The blackout is just the opening stages of a looming disaster taking place in the world. The movie expands on the disaster elements, such as with a Tesla pile-up and a plane crash on the beach, but other moments such as the piercing noise and the blackouts are from the book.

The morning after the blackout, Amanda sees a notification on her phone that hackers were behind the power failure, but is unable to read more about it.

Frone drop leaflets with Arabic writing that translates to Death to America. Other places have drones dropping leaflets written in Korean or Chinese.

By the time we’ve reached the end of the film, both families have done the one thing you’re not supposed to do in a horror movie: Split up!

From their spot in the forest, they see Manhattan go up in smoke as explosives land all over the city.

They do not reveal the actual source of the attack.

The super-hacking and use of drones seem to imply either humans or AI or a combination able to pull off a cyber-enhanced attack.

  1. I believe the Cruise components were actually developed by Aptiv, a spinoff of Delphi. So the same parts go to all the big three US auto makers.

  2. So how many idiots that watch this will go away thinking it represents real life?

So much FUD! While the premise of the movie is stupid beyond the pale, given the abysmal status of our education system, a major portion of the audience will be convinced that tech is evil and, by association, so is science. Way to go Netflix!

  3. Regarding the Cruise traffic jams – I wonder if they might have been triggered by people deliberately summoning them all to the same place at the same time.
That would match with the idiots going around putting traffic cones on self-driving cars to stop them.
Do they think of themselves as ‘fighting back’ against AI or some such nonsense?
