I think that it is sad that so many of the western space companies are screwing up so badly.
Building metal stations does not make sense. Why? Because Starship HLS can easily be converted into a much larger volume for this. Simply cut down the size of the tanks, and increase the volume of the pressurized interior.
The tanks only have to be large enough to carry a fairly empty one-off sharship to LEO. From there, it can even be re-fueled and used to boost it.
In fact, these could be put into a train and then used to ferry ppl to Mars.
So, companies like Axiom and Vast are making horrible mistakes by focusing on building small metal cans. Instead, they need to build Inflatables. Why?
Because safe pressurized volume is EVERYTHING. The BA-2200 ( more than 2200 m^3) is more than 2x the size of starship’s internal volume ( 900 m^3 ) AND it is capable of fitting in starship cargo.
These could not only be used for space station, but also put into a train mode and pushed with either chemical or nuclear tugs. These are also better suited for being on surface bases.
Hopefully, Boeing or one of the large old space will buy Bigelow Aerospace and compete against SX in this arena.
