Mexican Governor Says Tesla May Triple the Size of Gigamexico

The governor of Nuevo León says Tesla will double or triple the size of the GigaMexico factory and they will build the next-generation car, Cybertruck, and maybe Model Y, and its 4680 batteries there.

Tesla is talking about capacity increases where there will be demand for more model Y that needs another factory and cybertruck demand for another big factory. This would mean cost reduction to justify 2-3 million model Y per year.

Garcia noticed that in meetings with Tesla, he heard how the plan for the Gigamexico factory became more and more voluminous. Tesla intends to increase the size of Giga Mexico compared to its original plan. Tesla initially planned to produce the new generation car at the factory, but now Cybertruck production is also planned for the location. In addition, the new Model Y line and its 4680 battery packs are expected there. This suggests that the size of Giga Mexico will be two or three times larger than originally planned.

“The size of the plant, we were told, would be double or triple that size, and that it would produce not only Tesla’s new fuel-efficient car, but also the Cybertruck, possibly another production line for the Model Y and 4680 batteries.

“There are three or four factories in one, and at every meeting, we have to change the size of the water treatment plant that the factory will need, the size of the ramps, the entrances and walkways, the connections,” said Samuel Garcia, stressing that regardless of the size of the required infrastructure, the amount of incentives is limited. Tesla agreed with this condition and simply needs help creating infrastructure, the governor noted.

  1. I think that there may be some demand issues, and less sales than anticipated. Model 3 is getting older, refresh is not next gen car, just tiny adjustments. They need to develop proper next gen level 3 and then Y and of course one smaller cheaper car for the masses.

Now if the savings from batteries to get cheap smaller car or more automation in production will make it viable I don’t know.

  2. Telsa is going to need to double its production capacity over the next 3 years. I expect there will be four new factories.
