  1. No FSD will ever work inn the real world until the issue of who’s liable in an accident is figured out. Accidents will always happen. That’s why they’re called “accidents” as in unplanned bad events.
Is the driver responsible? In that case, why risk the white knuckle hand-hovering experience of being ever ready to take over in any unpredictable and arbitrary – to us humans anyway – situation? AI fails in broad daylight, in “easy” circumstances, and succeeds in circumstances that seem hard to us.
Is Tesla responsible? Doubtful Musk will ever put his company at risk for many multi-million dollar lawsuits.
Is the Insurance company responsible? In that case, the true level of risk has to be better determined, but see above: unpredictable and arbitrary risks. Insurance companies will have to get more involved in determining how risk is measured. Mere miles is not a sufficient measure; otherwise, the Apollo missions were the safest form of travel. No one ever died in an Apollo mission, aside from the fatal test of Apollo 1 still on the launch pad. But we know intuitively that can’t be right. And if the driver is absolved of responsibility, does that mean they won’t be ready to immediately take over as readily as they do (or fail to do) now?

    • Responsibility is rarely in accidents of any interest, insurance companies set premiums to make a profit, they accept shared responsibility to avoid costly court cases over the issue of responsibility, they are businesses not Judges of right or wrong they don’t care.

All Tesla have cameras as you are aware in serious cases who is to be blamed will be obvious and STILL insurance companies would except liability, if you Scott Baker drive drunk and run me over the insurance company will pay me, they may take action against you, and your insurance will be very high in the future, but I will be paid that’s the nature now, its not a problem

The Apollo mission is one data point and useless Insurance needs millions of data points to set average risk and thus premiums, it will have them

  2. Why would I buy a self driving car? I haven’t had an accident in forty years. I enjoy driving. My insurance is inexpensive.

        • Anyone who cannot imagine a use for superb self drive technology when it is finally solved and as cheap as cruise control, which it will be at some point. Is wasting their time commenting on a site like this.

          • Commercial drivers will be replaced. No doubt. The bots won’t drive into hostile Indian country without an escort riding shotgun.

      • People without legs can drive. Modifications have been available for decades that move the accelerator and break pedals up to the steering wheel.

        Old and blind people, sure.

    • KGB, why should an older person adopt/purchase a new technology if you don’t see notable value? You shouldn’t. FSD is really using people to gather data and feedback during their tech development phase as massive amounts of data is needed for training in a AI solution. The real target when FSD is cooked will be:
      1) those than want to do other things while their car is driving them somewhere and
      2) those that see it cheaper to just do ride share (avoiding car purchase, insurance, licensing…)
      3) are of a class that needs mobility but is not able to drive from several different reasons.
Buying FSD now while beta are either Tech / Tesla nerds wanting to check things out, or really think they will get value from FSD thinking it will be ready sooner than later (LOL)… or maybe just like to brag you have something others don’t (executive one up thinking).

    • For my teen, he has to rack up 120 hrs training (with me!) before he can drive on his own. As keen as he is, if he could just jump in a car with his mates right now and have the car drive he would. The easiest route will win.

      • Say there where cars where you could sleep during long trips and arrive at your destinatipn and be ready for hiking, skiing, or laying at the beach or whatever instead of arriving tired. Or you could enjoy something else like reading, drawing, watching YouTube, Driving, especially in cities is hardly enjoyable to me.
