Every two day we create as much information as was created by all of humanity up to 2003.
Smartphone location devices can say where you are and you can tell your friends. With AI can predict where you will go with high accuracy. With 14 photos we can with high accuracy determine who you are.
Fundamental societal issues
technology can allow you to actually confirm information and events instead of just estimates. You can know what servers and products were delivered and whether they were used.
Lisa Randall (Harvard University)
Theoretical physics.
Basic physics discoveries led to a lot of technology. Computers and internet.
moderator – Is there enough research going into basic science ?
Trend has been to get more applied but sometimes going direct is more incremental and slow but sometimes the big changes come from serendipitous discovery from broader research.

Eric Schmidt – On balance technology is positive –
Need more transparency and no anonymity to help prevent the downsides.
Need to have accountability
Need a name service for humans
Information is too powerful and too easily misused.
Kelly – we need absolute customization and personalization. Again echos the need for transparency.
Schmidt – Technology is power laws and optionality to create flaws and chaos.
Who is against it ? Autocratic governments etc…
there is also valid pushback from individuals.
Kelly – But there is on balance very little resistance.
Schmidt – Tech threatens incumbancies (the power of incumbancies).
30% of energy is for technology (data centers, TVs, devices, lights etc…)
Energy is mostly (75-80% or so from extractive sources)
What about health, opting for simplicity, wisdom, beauty
There is an off button.
Schmidt – I can go offline for 90 minutes, have a nice dinner.
Moderator – can you go offline for two days ?
Schmidt – no, 90 minutes
Kelly – If we can just create 1% more than we destroy with technology or have more benefits than downsides then it will compound and create civilization.
Empowerment at the scale of the individual
