A new WiGig 60GHz specification is aimed at enabling new, tri-band devices that will be able to leverage 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 60GHz and will scale up to transfer speeds of 7 gigabits per second. Leading the effort is the Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) Alliance in connection with the Wi-Fi Alliance, the key industry body overseeing Wi-Fi standards.
One gigabit per second or more is a possibility in the next five years.
* Figueroa said the effort does not have a specific timeline for when 60GHz Wi-Fi certified gear will be available.
The Wi-Fi Alliance and Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) announced an agreement to share technology toward the future 60 GHz specification, which promises a higher capacity for Wi-Fi. According to an Engadget report in February, Japanese tech companies Hitachi, Panasonic and Toshiba are already planning to release 60 GHz-capable products in the second half of this year, with the former two choosing WiGig.
* WirelessHD is unlikely to come together with WiGig on a technology front. According to reports, John LeMoncheck, CEO of SiBeam, one of WirelessHD’s main supporters, said WirelessHD is focused on video streaming with a claimed output of 28 Gbps, while WiGig’s 7 Gbps is suited more for data networking.
