Elon Musk says a Plaid Powertrain upgrade for the Model S, X and Roadster will be available in 2020. The new Model S will have a three-motor configuration which is also available for the next-generation Roadster. Tesla is currently racing a 7 seat Model S at Nürburgring. They will be trying to beat a track record set by a Porsche electric car.
A prototype Tesla Model S with a plaid powertrain set a Lugana Seca race track record. Tesla lapped Laguna Seca in 1:36.55 during advanced testing of their Model S Plaid powertrain and chassis prototype. This was a second faster than the record for a four-door sedan.
Yes. To be clear, Plaid powertrain is about a year away from production & applies to S,X & Roadster, but not 3 or Y. Will cost more than our current offerings, but less than competitors.

he’s got a good point, the reason for a pickup truck is cargo, adding extra seats means you can’t put in a sheet of 8 foot plywood or boards without them sticking out the back, forcing you to tie them down.
I asked everyone in my private study and 100% agreed that my judgement is the most important to me.
Nobody makes this much as a webcam sex worker Annie
There are a surprising number of dual cab pickup trucks where putting in the second row of seats means the actual cargo bed is little bigger than the rear of a station wagon.
They then have the nerve to charge MORE for these models, despite the obvious inferiority.
Just wait till they bring out one called “The Flux Capacitor”
The truck hasn’t been revealed, that is just a speculative render/artist impression. Aka, fake news.
Yes, I think the best thing for Tesla is some competition nipping at their heels rather than just idly hoping Tesla will spontaneously implode.
Porsche successfully made a car that is just a modest amount worse than a Model S and costs twice as much. Smaller car, less range, similar power, no decent charging infrastructure.
And regen braking saves a tonne of maintenance. No transmission…
The previous was called ludicrous so yes.
Plus how much better they can be with no need to wait for torque and the all wheel drives….
The class 8 trucks are going to make so much money. In an industry with ridiculously slim margins, they’re offering a product with a 2-3 year payback without subsidies.
Many states have huge subsidies for electric trucks that are going unclaimed because there are no trucks. With these, the return on investment occurs on or before day zero.
Delivery fleets have been begging for electric trucks for decades. They understand lifecycle costs down to the penny.
I hope they’re on the ball with day cab versions for class 3-7.
Pickup looks sexy as hell, but… where’s the bed-cargo capacity?
“Plaid power train”
Is that a ‘Spaceballs’ reference?
I agree Porsche gave it a good effort, took Tesla model S apart down to a screw, spent a few billion bucks but Tesla will still be number 1 because 3 motors is a bigger bang for the buck than 2 motors and a two speed transmission.
Elon hates being #2. Porsche is a good motivator to push Tesla premium options (like Plaid) forward.
Up until now, nobody has even tried to beat Tesla.
If anyone can do it, Porsche is a likely candidate.

Did Porsche really think they could beat Tesla?
