MKBHD Calls Fisker Ocean the Worst Car and They Are Now Within 30 Days of Bankruptcy

Fisker warned investors in SEC filing it could seek bankruptcy protection within 30 days, as cash reserves continue to shrink. Fisker missed an $8.4 million interest payment on March 15 and has not been able to make it in the 30-day grace period since that date. The EV maker had already idled production in Austria and has been offering steep discounts on unsold 2023 Ocean SUVs.

The EV maker had spent $904.9 million during 2023, and had $325.5 million in cash at the end of the year. As of the middle of April 2024, Fisker said it had some $53.9 million in readily accessible funds and an additional $11.2 million in other reserves.

Marques has said that it is not his reviews killing Fisker or the Humane AI pin. MKBHD just has to be honest with his reviews.

MKBHD first reviewed the first Fisker Ocean and found it to be buggy with safety issues.

Fisker has to send technicians out to update the software. However, Fisker now claims an OTA (over the air update capability.)

MKBHD has updates his review with a new version of the software. The new software is better but the car is still bad and still the worst that MKBHD has reviewed.

It is not just MKBHD that issues with Fisker safety. In February, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a second investigation into EV startup Fisker’s Ocean SUV, after the agency received four complaints about the vehicle rolling away unexpectedly, including one injury. In January, 2024, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation began investigating complaints of sudden loss of braking performance. Fisker claims that problem was resolved with a software update that went out to vehicles in December. Owners have complained for months about the SUV suddenly losing power, problems getting in and out of the vehicle, trouble shifting into gear and the SUV’s hood flying up.

In April, 2024 the NHTSA, opened a third investigation into doors that fail to open.

The complaints allege an intermittent failure of the latch and handle preventing the opening of the driver, front passenger and/or rear doors. Some reports allege the inability to open the door from either the interior or exterior door handle, resulting in the need to use another door to egress. The reports allege that the emergency override mechanism also fails to open the door. Some of the 14 ODI reports did not mention these allegations in the report and instead made ODI aware during consumer outreach after the report was submitted.

Here is the NHTSA page on the Fisker Ocean. Fisker has delivered about 6400 Fisker Oceans and NHTSA has 109 customer complaints.

Another reviewer says some of the things are not so bad.

  1. Is anyone else wondering if OTA software updates could be a massive security risk? Especially for a semi-self driving car?

  2. This youtuber seems to be looking for companies in their death beds to give them the coup de grace.

Not that I complain, these companies he has mistreated are really duds and have bad products, but he’s earning a reputation of undertaker of companies.

    • “This youtuber” is the biggest tech reviewer on the platform with 15M subscribers. He’s a big deal. He reviews a lot of phone and related hardware, and has also been dabbling in car reviews, especially EVs. He was one of the three outlets Tesla seeded review unit Cybertrucks to.

He doesn’t seek out bad tech to rag on it. He reviews tech that the audience is interested in, and if it is bad, he says so. He gets a lot more requests to review products than he has bandwidth for on his channels, so he tends to only review the ones that are most of interest/entertaining. Both Fisker and Humane (the AI pin device company) have received a fair amount of buzz around their products, so it made sense that he would review them. Unfortunately for these companies, they are bad products.

Fisker is going bankrupt because their product isn’t good enough and the car business is hard, even if you are very well capitalized. It’s laughable to suggest that Marques caused the bankruptcy.

      • LOL ok. It’s not mean spirited, just a fact in the same way I’d also call Mr. Beast a youtuber regardless of how many subscribers his channel has.
