Elon Says They Will Reveal the Robotaxi on Aug 8, 2024

Elon Musk says Tesla will unveil the robotaxi on Aug 8, 2024.

What does this mean?

It means Elon and Tesla are super confident about FSD.

It gives more credibility to the Tesla Korean engineers who work on FSD saying that Tesla would reach robotaxi level capability by June/July 2024.

My projections of FSD developments for 2024 is looking more solid.

  1. I will never get in such a car the first few years.
And honestly, tax them to the point you tax worklabour.

  2. Musk also unveiled Starship in 2018. Doesn’t mean it’s ready or close. Nobody will solve level5 before 2030.

    • Yes, Starship is ready/close. After the third test launch it made it to orbit, succeeded at hot staging, succeeded at prop transfer test, open/close payload bay door, Starlink images during re-entry. It’s as “ready” as all the competing launchers to put stuff in orbit in expendable mode right now. Several more test launches this year should bring it very close to operational reusability.

  3. Seems like Elon is very confident about fast progress. We will see in the next few months if it was all talk or are the improvements substantial.

Unveiling doesn’t mean the start of robotaxis. Could be just marketing . They will just present the concepts and plan. It is unclear when it will actually start.

They can still have their support centers with people in car replicas – to take over remotely in a very short time, use cameras,.. to resolve the potential issue if autopilot can safely disengage. Radar would add extra layer of security, I think ditching radar and go vision only was perhaps a mistake here.

Self driving would be substantial. Cost savings huge. Virtually all products will be cheaper – because cheaper logistics. It is not just delivery logistics to your home, but transport to supermarket, if product has 50 parts they need to pay transport cost to factories to assemble them and then forward,…

Less car wear, less insurance costs, more times saved if traffic congestions could be anticipated and driven around them,…

I still am having hard to believe that there will be any real autopilot without true artificial intelligence. There are just too many exceptions only intelligent person can handle.

  4. FSD doesn’t have to be solved to start robotaxi operations.

It only has to be solved for places where people are likely to use robotaxis, and where regulations allow it.

If there are specific things that cause problems, Tesla can have people monitor for those things and make the taxis avoid them. It can re-route to avoid dangerous turns and the team may have ways of monitoring construction to prevent the cars from accepting fares that route to places that are closed.

With this type of team, robotaxis can begin deployment today.

  5. Fsd 12.3.3 is now worse than 12.3 according to the fsd tracker. Ie it’s way too early to claim fsd is solved. Will probably be a few years… And Musk will get heavily criticised for trotting out the robots too early
