The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has been testing the chemical bombs which create rapid expansion of foam. The foam expands and hardens to block tunnels.
Update:/b> More details on sponge bombs and rapidly expanding foams in a new article.

Hamas has hundreds of miles of tunnels that are hundreds of feet deep.
Israel has also been using bulldozers, explosives and air strikes to destroy and collapse tunnels.

The image used on this web page is from Mark Rober’s “elephant toothpaste” video. It is not a “sponge bomb”. It’s a science experiment from a couple years ago.
These are tactical barriers to prevent Hamas gunmen from popping up behind them as they advance on the surface or within the main tunnels. If it’s anything like the ‘Great Stuff’ foam, it’s a pain to dig through, but not a permanent barrier.
Sponge Bomb Square Pants? Is Mr. Crusty Serving the HAMAS Buster Burger?
Why don’t they just flood them with sewage or sea water?
Yup. Rats, terrorists all got to come up for air. They won’t be able to fire wet munitions. When water comes up, we’ll see wet tunnel entrances pop up through out all Gaza.
I like the idea of flooding the tunnels after Israel has used sponge bombs to block every entrance they can detect. See how far they can swim.
Hostages?
Flooding will take hours. There is plenty of time to climb to the surface.
Others have proposed this.

Not clear why they don’t do it.
nuke them all!!
Hamas has friends with Nukes and chemicals.
Absolutely nobody is going to start WWII to save Hamas.
It could be good where blasting tunnels can damage structures on the ground. Otherwise, blasting tunnels is easier and more effective.
