Ukraine Used UK Cruise Missiles to Destroy Russian Kilo Submarine and Landing Ship in Dry Dock

Ukraine used ten UK Storm Shadow cruise missiles to destroy a Russian Kilo Submarine and a landing ship in a Sevastopol dry dock. They were on land in dry dock for repairs. Ukraine fired ten missiles and three got through.

Ukraine had taken out a S-400 anti-missile battery in north western Crimea and occupied two oil platforms. This opened up a window for Ukrainian missiles to get through to hit Sevastopol.

There have been recent reports that Ukraine was angered that they could not attack Russian ships anchored in Sevastopol with explosives in drone submarines last year. Now, Ukraine has destroyed a submarine and ship in Russia’s Black Sea fleet using cruise missiles given to them by the UK.

The Starlink system control over Ukraine and Crimea was handed over to the Pentagon. There is a report that the Starlink system over Crimea had an outage at about the same time as this Ukraine attack. However, the UK Storm shadow missiles do not need Starlink communications. This proves that Nextbigfuture was correct when I said that if the US or UK military wanted to let Ukraine attack the Russian Black Sea fleet that they could give Ukraine that capability. It is not up to the CEO of commercial businesses to give weapons or the capability for military action. Otherwise, Ukraine could call up the CEO of Lockheed and ask for a bunch of F-35 fighter jets.

The Storm Shadow cruise missiles costs about 2 million pounds each. They are long range missiles developed by the UK and France. They weight 1300 kilograms each. It has two warheads in each. One warhead break opens a hardened defense and the next destroys the target. It can go through 2 to four meters of concrete.

Russia has 11–12 original Kilo-class submarines (Project 877) and 10 9 Improved Kilo-class submarines (Project 636.3). Two additional Improved Kilo-class submarines are on order for the Pacific Fleet and are expected to be delivered in 2023–2024.

Rostov na Donu was a diesel-electric submarine of the improved Project 636.3 class of modern Russian ships. This was a $300 million submarine.

The Minsk was a Ropucha-class landing ship of the Russian Navy.

The Kilo-class submarine is a diesel-electric submarine that has been one of the most successful naval programs in modern history.

There is also discussion about a distraction attack using suicide explosive ship drones. They then launched some S-200 missiles to allow them to identify the Russian air defense. Ukraine launched anti-radar missiles to blind the air defense and then they launched the Storm Shadow missiles.

This shows that the Russian S-400 systems are fairly sophisticated and effective. It shows that multi-pronged missile attacks can overwhelm the defense systems. A regular S-400 battalion consists of up to eight launchers with 32 missiles and a mobile command post. TASS reported that as of the end of 2015, a total of eleven Russian missile regiments were armed with S-400, and by the end of 2016 their number was expected to increase to sixteen. In 2012, it cost of US$200 million for a battery and reserve missiles. Russia was exporting systems in 2021 for a cost of US$500 – US$625 million for a battery and reserve missiles.

China has at least six batteries of S-400.

  1. Scuttlebut says Putin wants to give lil Kim a submarine in exchange for lots of old defective artillery shells. Maybe he can given him this one. It’s defective, too.

    • US observed a North Korean Army artillery barrage onto an off shore island. Forty percent of the rounds fell in the water before they got to the island. This could be troublesome for attacking Russians.

  2. Still they shot down a lot of them. Ukraine should use same tactics as Russia. Overhelm defenses with cheap drones. The west should do something to ramp up cheap drone production and use them as bait as Russia is doing.

    • Shouldn’t be hard to make cheap drones that have a very large radar cross-section, so they tend to draw fire. Corner reflector perhaps…

Not sure if anti-air systems would favor ‘bright’ targets, ‘nearest’ targets, ‘fastest’ targets – or if they just randomly pick. Anyone know details?

  3. This blog post about Ukraine’s use of UK cruise missiles to target a Russian Kilo submarine and landing ship in dry dock is undeniably a matter of utmost concern and international interest. It highlights the evolving dynamics in the region and the need for responsible diplomacy to prevent further escalation. The utilization of advanced cruise missile technology in such a manner underscores the importance of international cooperation and peacekeeping efforts. It is a stark reminder of the consequences that can arise from geopolitical tensions.
Let’s hope for a peaceful resolution to such conflicts and an increased focus on diplomatic dialogue.

  4. With the trolls out early today it is worth remembering that BOTH parties have sizeable minorities which support Putin whenever they are not in power. It is the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” BS. Just pick a president during Putin’s reign and you will see Putin during that time criticizing him and the opposition praising Putin and saying what a great relationship America could have with Russia if only the “adults” in America were in charge and could deal with him in a less confrontational way. Once that party comes to power they want everyone to forget about how friendly they were towards Putin and everyone usually does.

Turning a bipartisan issue into a divisive partisan one is great for scoring some cheap points in the near term while damaging your country’s position long term.

Now can we turn to the really important issue: Mexico has discovered an advanced life form from space that evolved out of paper mache and mixed and broken animal and human bones! It was discovered by a known hoaxer which proves that if you keep faking something you can eventually make it true.

  5. We need Trump in office to stop these insane hyper-nationalist Ukranidiots and restore good relations between Russia and the USA. The whole Black Sea coast of the sham Ukrainian state needs to be returned to Russian control as it was historically. All countries deserve valiant decisive leaders like Trump, Putin and Xi.

    • Trumps a losing bitch. Claimed he won, tried to start a revolution, quit to play golf anyway, and now doesn’t own the revolution attempt. America is better off without him.

        • So lets say that film is entirely true. All of it. What is Trump, the rightful president, doing? Hes just accepting the situation and playing golf. Those patriots who did try to do something are all in prison. And he don’t care. Again, hes a quitting losing bitch.

      • He’s just a bitter Russian troll trying to make an issue with strong bipartisan support (support for Ukraine) into a divisive partisan one by pretending to be a Trump fanboy.

    • Yes we should let Putin win so Russia is stronger, then we will all be safer? You think?
Sweden and Finland have finally woken up and realized that appeasement is not going to work, hence the decision to join NATO. Putin is a bully and only understands force and strength.

      • Russian culture has a long history of murdering losers like Putin. He must continue the war and sacrifice the last Russian male or he will be murdered. Win Win.

    • We should make Russia stronger so we are all safer, you think?
If we let Russia have Ukraine then Putin will be friends with us, you think?

  6. I have to ask, what do these attacks achieve? Nothing. Destroying a couple of decrepit old ships in dry dock does nothing for Ukraine. Those missiles would have been of better use against hardened targets on Russia’s defensive line. This might have allowed Ukrainian armor to then break through en-masse.

Ukrainian deaths now number close to 500k. They are now recruiting women and 16 year old kids to serve on the front line. This is insane.

    • The landing craft is essential for supplying the Red Army in Ukraine now that the Kerch Bridge is damaged. To date Ukraine has sunk four of the available landing craft putting a severe pinch in the supply line. Four Russian generals were liquidated for complaining about a lack of ammunition, counter battery radar, food, etc. Coming winter will be cold, hungry, and defenseless for the Red Army. Russians always camp and defend villages in the lowland instead of the important military high ground. They camp in the villages because they have no supply of food, water, tents, tent heaters, and women. Ukraine routinely takes the high ground around the village and pummels the village until the Russians retreat or are exterminated.

    • This is russias newest submarine. They use them to fire missiles from the crimean sea to terrorize civilians in Ukraine. They are capable of building 1 per year at enormous expense. A cheap missile killed this very, very expensive submarine and destroyed whatever expensive ~$50 million a piece missiles it contained.
