An ACS energy journal article expected a 600 mile range electric semi truck would cost $400,000. Tesla will sell them for $200,000 and as low as $150,000 for shorter 300 mile range trucks.
Currently diesel semi trucks cost $120,000.
Tesla is rapidly bringing battery costs down to $100 per KWh. This will likely occur by 2020.
Battery costs will continue to fall at about 7-12% per year.
If Tesla can make the batteries last and keep the other maintenance issues under control, then the electric semi truck will get to the $120,000 diesel truck price in about 2025. They will then have better than half the operating costs as the initial costs drop.
